Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN: , one of the world's largest makers of cell phone chips, reported an 11% jump in profit for the quarter ended Sept. 30. The Dallas-based company reported third quarter income of $776 million on revenue of $3.66 billion, compared to profit of $702 million on revenue of $3.8 billion in the same quarter last year. TI posted reported earnings per share of 52 cents compared to 45 cents the previous year. Analysts had expected the company to post earnings per share of 50 cents on revenue of $3.66 billion.
Apple profit rises 67% as Mac sales top 2 million unit
Apple Inc. (AAPL: news, chart, profile) on Monday reported a fourth-quarter profit of $904 million, or $1.01 a share, on revenue of $6.22 billion. During the same period a year ago, Apple earned $542 million, or 62 cents a share, on $4.84 billion in sales. Apple's results topped the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial, who forecast the company to earn 86 cents a share on revenue of $6.07 billion. Among the quarter's highlights were sales of 2.16 million Macintosh PCs and 1.11 million iPhones.
